Risperdal Lawsuit Information Center

Men or boys who developed a condition called gynecomastia – male breast growth – while taking the antipsychotic drug Risperdal should consider filing a Risperdal lawsuit to obtain compensation for the pain, suffering and embarrassment they have endured. Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen unit has already been named in numerous Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit claims filed on behalf of men and boys who experienced male breast growth, lactation and surgical procedures, including liposuction and mastectomy, to remove breast tissue they developed allegedly due to Risperdal. Some of these claims have already resulted in Risperdal settlements.

The Risperdal lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are offering free legal evaluations to anyone who suffered gynecomastia that may be associated with this medication. The Firm is also investigating Invega lawsuit claims for individuals who suffered the same condition while taking this antipsychotic, which is also marketed by Jannsen. If you or someone you love may have been a victim of Risperdal gynecomastia, please contact the Firm today to learn more about your legal options.

What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and adolescents. It is also approved to treat irritability in children (5-to-16 years of age) with autistic disorder, and is sometimes used off-label to treat ADHD. Approved in 1993, sales of Risperdal peaked in 2007 at more than $4.5 billion in 2007. After the drug lost patent protection, sales of Risperdal fell to $358 million by 2012.

Like other atypical antipsychotics, Risperdal targets the serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain. The drug has been linked to a number of serious side effects, including Risperdal gynecomastia, diabetes, and movement disorders.

Since its approval, a number of studies have pointed to a link between the use of Risperdal and male breast development. For instance, in 2006, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology reported that some children who took Risperdal had developed high levels of the hormone prolactin, which is associated with breast development in girls and lactation in new mothers. A second study published in 2009 in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology reported that the elevated prolactin levels seen in Risperdal patients could persist for up to two years.

risperdal lawsuitA number of Risperdal lawsuits have been filed around the country that allege Johnson & Johnson and its Janssen unit were aware that Risperdal could cause gynecomastia, but concealed that knowledge from the public. Thus far, most of the lawsuits involving gynecomastia allegations have been individual claims, rather than Risperdal class action lawsuits. In October 2012, Bloomberg News reported that the companies had begun settling some Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits that were pending in a consolidated litigation in Pennsylvania State Court in Philadelphia.

In 2012, it was also reported that Johnson & Johnson had agreed to settle charges with the federal government over the way it marketed some of its drugs, including Risperdal. However, in the summer of 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that Johnson & Johnson was threatening to back out of the $212 million deal because the U.S. Department of Justice wanted the company to admit that it had downplayed side effects associated with Risperdal, including its potential to increase prolactin levels in children. The government had also charged that Johnson & Johnson had illegally promoted the use of Risperdal for children long before it had been approved for any pediatric indications. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company balked at the settlement agreement out of concerns that the admission the government was seeking could hurt its position in Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits.
