A man in California is one of the latest to file a Risperdal lawsuit against the makers of an anti-psychotic medication that allegedly caused him to develop male breasts, according to recent reports.
The complaint was filed by the 22-year old and his mother on January 16th in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. According to his Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit, in which Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals are both named defendant, the plaintiff in this case took the drug from 1997 to 2001 and experienced weight gain, diabetes, damage to his sexual functions and other problems. He also may have developed serious anxiety, embarrassment, difficulty concentrating and other psychological side effects allegedly caused by the situation. The man’s Risperdal lawsuit now alleges that Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn patients about the risks associated with the medication, and may have concealed their knowledge of problems that may stem from its use.
According to court filings, Risperdal gynecomastia injuries have been alleged in a number of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen. A Bloomberg.com report from September 2012 indicates that the company agreed to settle a similar case around that time in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The plaintiff in that case alleged similar psychological injuries stemming from gynecomastia, a condition categorized by male breast development. This Risperdal complication was later reversed via breast removal surgery, his lawsuit alleged. The Bloomberg report states that the company has also agreed to five other Risperdal lawsuit settlements in the Pennsylvania state court litigation.
Court documents show more than 200 Risperdal lawsuits filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas by individuals who developed gynecomastia and a range of other side effects. Additionally, several other cases have also been consolidated in Middlesex County Superior Court in New Jersey. Symptoms of Risperdal gynecomastia include nipple discharge, pain, tenderness and swelling, and may result in the need for surgery.
